Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

PM&R Leadership Message

Wayne State University School of Medicine located in the Detroit Medical Center at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM). For almost 50 years this Department and RIM have been educating medical students, medical residents, postdoctoral neuropsychologists and graduate students, along with allied health professionals, our patients, their caregivers and the community.

The Department of PM&R at RIM has a long history of working with other departments at the university in the development and application of advances in medical knowledge. We were one of the original federally designated Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems, and remain a longitudinal data collection center for the Model Systems. On staff are diverse and energetic educators that include not only our "full time" faculty, but also leading community rehabilitation specialists as volunteer faculty. Our faculty has received national and State of Michigan recognition for their contributions to the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Residents are expected to complete research and quality improvement projects during the course of their residency. Recent graduates of our residency have obtained fellowships at Harvard, Stanford, UT Southwestern, Johns Hopkins and the University of Pittsburgh in spinal cord and brain injury medicine; MD Anderson for Cancer Rehab; University of Michigan, Emory University, UT Southwestern Dallas all for Pediatric PM&R; and locally in the Detroit Medical Center in our accredited Pain Medicine Fellowship and Sports Medicine Fellowship. In addition to numerous poster presentations at the AAPM&R, ASCIP, ACRM, ASIA and AAP, they have also co-authored chapters with faculty in major text books and have contributed to KnowledgeNow, an online educational tool from the American Academy of PM&R. Recent graduates have also served in leadership positions in the Association of Academic Physiatrists.

Through our partnership with the Detroit Medical Center and the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, our residents have the opportunity to work in a nationally recognized, cutting edge environment for the delivery of rehabilitation services.
